Stefanyishyna commented on the possibility of a delay in Ukraine’s accession to the EU

European Commissioner Marta Kos’s suggestion that Ukraine and Moldova might be separated during the EU accession process is unconstructive. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishyna in comments to Interfax-Ukraine.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that she is currently in Budapest to help resolve the issues that are currently causing Hungary to block Ukraine’s progress toward EU membership.

“This is not a simple dialogue, but Ukraine is determined to find solutions that will help unblock the negotiation process. Therefore, I consider statements about the possibility of a decision on Moldova (without Ukraine—Ed.) being made during my visit to Budapest to be unconstructive,” she said.

This was Stefanishina’s reaction to the remarks by Marta Kos, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, that the EU is considering the possibility of continuing Moldova’s accession process while separating it from Ukraine.

Olga Stefanishyna also noted that she is scheduled to speak with Kos by phone on May 1, during which she plans to raise the issue in question.

As is well known, Hungary continues to block the opening of negotiation chapters on Ukraine’s accession to the EU, citing alleged issues concerning the Hungarian national minority.
