Amosov Mykola Mykhailovych – Ukrainian doctor, scientist in the field of medicine and biocybernetics, public figure, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1969) and the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (1993).
Place of Birth, Education
He was born on December 6, 1913 in the village of Olkhovo, now Vologda Oblast, Russia.
His mother worked as a midwife, and his father left the family after returning from the war.
From 12 to 18 years old, Amosov studied at a school in Cherepovets, after which he entered the local mechanical college.
In 1935, he entered the Arkhangelsk Medical Institute, which he graduated with honors in 1939. Initially, I planned to study physiology, but due to the lack of places in graduate school, I chose surgery.
At the same time, he studied in absentia at the Industrial Institute. In 1940, he received a diploma in engineering with honors, having prepared a project for a large aircraft with a steam turbine.
Career
Since 1932, Amosov worked in Arkhangelsk as a shift supervisor at a power plant at a sawmill.
Before the outbreak of World War II, he was a surgeon in the hospital of Cherepovets. Later, he was involved in the mobilization commission, and later he became the chief surgeon of the field mobile hospital. Then he worked as a surgeon in Moscow.
In 1952, Amosov moved to Kyiv, where he lived for 49 years.
In March 1953, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic “Lung resection in tuberculosis” and headed the department of the Kyiv Medical Institute.
In 1960, he headed the Department of Biocybernetics of the Institute of Cybernetics of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
In 1962, he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (Ukrainian SSR). That same year, he received the Lenin Prize and became a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
On January 17, 1963, Amosov performed the first mitral valve prosthesis in the USSR. In particular, in 1965, he reported on the successful use of hemispherical prostheses of the heart valves in patients who were not suitable for bullet prostheses due to a small left ventricle.
In 1968, he was appointed Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Kyiv Research Institute of Tuberculosis and Thoracic Surgery.
In 1969, Amosov became an academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.
Also from 1955 to 1970, he headed the Department of Thoracic Surgery of the Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians.
Since 1983, he has been the director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery.
From 1962 to 1979, Amosov was elected a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of the V convocations and was a member of the Commission on Health and Social Security.
From 1989 to 1991 he was a People’s Deputy of the USSR.
In 1998, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the II degree.
Death
On May 29, 1999, Amosov was operated on in Germany: a biological aortic valve was installed and 2 coronary shunts were made.
The scientist died on December 12, 2002 at the age of 90 from a heart attack.

- in 1934 with Halyna Soboleva;
- in 1944 – by Lydia Denysenko.
