Vladimir Konstantinovich Vysokovych – pathologist, bacteriologist, epidemiologist, Doctor of Medicine, Professor.
Place of Birth, Education
He was born on March 2 (14 according to the Gregorian calendar) in Gaisyn.
In 1871, he graduated from the First Kharkiv Gymnasium with a gold medal and entered the Medical Faculty of Kharkiv University.
In 1876 he completed his studies and remained at the university as a scholarship holder.
Career
During the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878, Vysokovych was mobilized as a military doctor and sent to the Caucasus. He worked in hospitals in Tiflis, Abastuman and Yerevan.
In 1878, he returned to Kharkiv and worked in the clinics of the university, and from 1879 – in the Kharkiv military hospital.
In 1880, he became a scholarship holder of Kharkiv University to prepare for the professorship in pathological anatomy.
A year later, in 1881, Vysokovich passed the exam for the degree of Doctor of Medicine, and in May 1882 he defended his dissertation on blood vessel damage in syphilis.
Since 1884 he worked as a professor at Kharkiv University, and since 1895 – at Kyiv University.
Kyiv period
After moving to Kyiv, Vysokovych headed the Department of Pathological Anatomy and the Pathological Institute of St. Volodymyr University. He developed scientific and creative ties with pathological institutes of universities in Germany and the Czech Republic.
In 1895, together with other professors, he headed the first chemical and microscopic office at the Society of Kyiv Doctors.
In 1901, he gave lectures to Kyiv doctors on bacteriology and pathological anatomy of plague.
In 1906, Vysokovych headed the commission of advanced training courses for doctors.
In 1908, he founded the Department of Pathological Anatomy of the Women’s Medical Institute in Kyiv and headed it until 1911.
Also, since 1910, he was the director of the Kyiv Bacteriological Institute.
Death
He passed away on May 26, 1912 at the age of 59.
He was buried at the Baikove cemetery in Kyiv.
Marital Status
Vysokovich was married to Olga Kovalevskaya, who had a son, Leonid, from her first marriage. Subsequently, the couple had 3 children – daughter Nina and sons Evgeny and Nikolai.
