Anatoly Anatolyevich Shariy is a pro-Russian propagandist.
Place of Birth, Education
He was born on August 20, 1978 in the city of Kyiv.
As Shariy said, he allegedly received higher education at the Institute of Intelligence at the Kyiv Tank Engineering and Technical School.
Career
In the 2000s, Shariy began his journalistic career in Ukraine, working first in a number of women’s publications, including Natalia, Edinnaya and Polina. Later, he joined the editorial board of the newspaper “Segodnya” and had cooperation with the Russian publication “Moskovsky Komsomolets”.
Since 2008, he has worked for From-UA and Obozrevatel, where he was engaged in investigative journalism. His materials related, among other things, to illegal activities in the field of gambling and drug trafficking.
In 2012, he left Ukraine and received political asylum in Lithuania. Shariy himself explained this by political persecution by the authorities of Viktor Yanukovych. According to him, due to investigations related to the possible involvement of state institutions in drug trafficking. At that time, two criminal cases were opened against him in Ukraine:
- one – for shooting from a traumatic weapon in the premises of McDonald’s, as a result of which a man with whom Shariy had a conflict was injured;
- the other – for staging an attempt on his own life.
After the start of Euromaidan , he published a video with a position that echoed the rhetoric of Russian propaganda. In his statements about the war in eastern Ukraine, he called it a “civil conflict”.
Today, Shariy’s YouTube channel in Ukraine is blocked. He lives in Spain and is under investigation: Ukrainian law enforcement agencies have charged him with committing high treason and violating the principle of equality of citizens.
Political Activities
In 2019, Shariy founded a political party under his own name – “Shariy’s Party”, which he actually headed. The political force took part in the parliamentary elections of the same year, gaining 2.23% of the vote, which did not allow it to get into the Verkhovna Rada.
However, in the local elections of 2020, the party managed to win mandates in several city councils, as well as become part of the Odesa Regional Council. However, already in 2022, the court decided to ban its activities on the territory of Ukraine.
Marital Status
He is married to Olga Shariy. The latter is the speaker of Shariy.net and the official head of the Shariy Party.
The propagandist has a child from a previous marriage.
