Feofil Gavrilovich Yanovsky is a Ukrainian therapist, pulmonologist, phthisiologist , nephrologist, Doctor of Medicine, professor, member of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.
Place of Birth, Education
He was born on June 12 (24 according to the Gregorian calendar) in 1860 in Mynkivtsi.
He came from the old noble family of Gogol-Yanovsky and was a distant relative of the writer Nikolai Gogol.
He graduated from the Kyiv gymnasium in Podil with a gold medal. Subsequently, he studied at the Faculty of Medicine of Kyiv University.
Career
At one time, Yanovsky worked as a resident with Karl Tritschel. In particular, he trained in clinics and laboratories in Berlin and Paris.
In the Oleksandrivska hospital, he founded the first bacteriological laboratory in Kyiv for the diagnosis of tuberculosis.
In 1904, he became a professor at the therapeutic clinic of Odessa University.
From 1905 to 1921 he worked at the University of Kyiv, and from 1921 to 1928 – at the Kyiv Medical Institute.
He also founded the Kyiv therapeutic school and wrote more than 60 scientific papers on tuberculosis, infectious diseases, diseases of the lungs, kidneys and digestive system. In particular, he participated in the creation of anti-tuberculosis sanatoriums and edited the first edition of the Great Medical Encyclopedia.
At one time, Yanovnsky became the first doctor elected academician of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.
Among his patients were such famous writers as Lesya Ukrainka, Ivan Karpenko-Karyi, Maria Zankovetska, Mykhailo Starytskyi and Volodymyr Korolenko.
In particular, in Kyiv, Yanovsky was called a “holy doctor”. There were many stories about his popularity among the townspeople.
Death
Yanovsky passed away on July 8, 1928. He was buried at the Lukyanivske cemetery in Kyiv.
The National Institute of Phthisiology and Pulmonology is named after him.
Also in 1993, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine established the Yanovsky Prize for scientific work in the field of therapy, clinical bacteriology and immunology.
Marital Status
In 1890, Yanovsky married Anna Hryhorovych-Barskaya, a representative of the old Kiev family.
