Karl Genrikhovich Tritschel – clinician, phthisiologist , neuropathologist, Doctor of Medicine, Honored Ordinary Professor, Head of the Department of Special Pathology and Therapy with the Hospital Clinic of the Kyiv University of St. Volodymyr (1878-1903).
Place of Birth, Education
He was born on November 4, 1842 in Korsun, Kyiv province in the family of a doctor.
He studied at the 1st Kyiv Gymnasium, and after graduation he entered the Faculty of Medicine of the University of St. Volodymyr.
Career
In 1868, 4 years after graduating from the university, Tritschel became a resident of a hospital therapeutic clinic. Already in 1872, he defended his dissertation “On the nerves of the gastric mucosa”, and on May 26, 1873, he was elected a privat-docent of the Department of Special Pathology of Q Therapy.
On May 25, 1879, Tritschel was approved as an extraordinary professor of the Department of Special Pathology and Therapy and head of the hospital therapeutic clinic.
On October 10, 1879, he also became a freelance resident at the Kyiv Military Hospital, where he worked with the wounded and sick after the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878.
In 1880-1883, he headed the Associate Professorship of Skin Diseases and taught a course on syphilis.
In particular, since 1881 he was the vice-president of the Society of Kyiv Doctors. With his participation, a bacteriological station was created in Kyiv and night medical shifts were organized to help the poor at home.
Tritschel was also one of the founders of the Society for the Control of Communicable Diseases, and from 1904 he headed it.
In addition, he headed the Society for the Fight against Tuberculosis. On his initiative, a sanatorium for such patients was opened in Pushcha-Vodytsia.
In 1906, Tritschel participated in the international congress on tuberculosis in Paris, and in 1909 – in the medical congress in Budapest and the anti-tuberculosis conference in Stockholm.
In 1884, he was awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus II degree and approved as an ordinary professor.
On March 3, 1901, Tritschel received the title of Honored Ordinary Professor.
On November 4, 1902, he retired, but continued to work for some time.
On October 25, 1904, he left the posts of head of the department, resident and head of the clinical department of the hospital. After that, he was engaged in social activities.
Death
Tritschel passed away on August 11, 1914.
