Winston Churchill

Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill was a British journalist, politician and statesman of the twentieth century.

Place of Birth, Education

He was born on November 30, 1874 in Blenheim Palace in Woodstock.

He was educated in private schools, after which he entered the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst.

After completing his studies, he received the officer rank of junior lieutenant and was sent to military service in South India.

Military service

Churchill’s military service in the hussar regiment did not last long – he was sent to Cuba, where he worked as a war correspondent and published his materials in the press. After that, he took part in a military campaign against the uprising of Pashtun tribes. The completion of the operation was the reason for writing a book called “History of the Malakand Field Corps”, which brought him not only fame, but also a significant fee.

Political Activities

After military service, Churchill decided to take part in the elections to the British Parliament. He was nominated by the Conservative Party, but without success.

Danny, he went to South Africa as a war correspondent for the Morning Post newspaper. Subsequently, he spent some time in the United States of America (USA), where he gave lectures, and with the funds received, he decided to start political activities in Britain.

In 1911, Churchill was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. During the First World War, he initiated the creation of the Royal British Air Force. In 1919, he took the positions of Minister of War and Minister of Aviation. During the 1920s, he mostly worked in parliament, holding various government positions, and in his spare time he was fond of painting.

In total, he twice became Prime Minister of Great Britain. He first headed the government at the age of 65, after the resignation of Neville Chamberlain’s cabinet. He became prime minister for the second time at the age of 77, when the conservatives came to power again in 1952. During his first term, in 1941, Britain signed an agreement with the Soviet Union to fight together against Nazi Germany. Subsequently, the Atlantic Charter was concluded with the United States, which was later joined by the USSR.

In 1953, Churchill was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, after which he became Serorm Winston Churchill. In the same year, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Resignation

In 1955, when he turned 80, he retired and focused on creativity – he devoted a lot of time to painting and writing. Soon after, his major literary project was published – a four-volume work called “History of English-speaking Peoples”.

Churchill died on January 24, 1965 in London at the age of 90. He was buried in the village of Bleydon, near Blenheim Palace, where he was born.

Marital Status

In 1908, Winston Churchill met Clementine Houser, who later became his wife. That same year they got married. The couple subsequently had five children.
