Mykhailo Stepanovich Khoma is a Ukrainian singer, songwriter, actor, film director, producer, frontman and founder of the band “DZIDZIO”.
Place of Birth, Education
He was born on November 20, 1983 in the village of Bortnyky, Lviv region. He spent his early years there, and at the age of 4 he moved to Novoyavorivsk with his parents.
In 1991, he began studying at Novoyavoriv School No. 1. At the same time, his parents enrolled him in the local music school in the vocal and choral department.
After graduating from the music school, he entered the Lviv Music College, where he was educated at the conducting faculty.
Later, he continued his studies at the Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts, but eventually switched to part-time and returned to Lviv.
Career
In Lviv, Homa founded the group “Friends”, with which he performed at weddings and private events. The team consisted of Vasyl Bula, Yaroslava Khoma (Prytula), Serhiy Lyba, Roman Kulyk, Nazariy Huk, Ihor Hrynchuk and Orest Zhuk. At the same time, he began to teach vocals for children in his own studio in the Palace of Culture “Crystal”.
During this period, the singer also collaborated with the band “Mercury” of the Customs Service of Ukraine, thanks to which he later received a job offer. He underwent an internship at customs at the Krakovets checkpoint.
After some time, he realized that he wanted to fully concentrate on music, so he interrupted his internship and returned to creative activities.
At that time, he recorded his version of the song “Calendar”, the authors of which were singers Andriy Kuzmenko and Oleg Turko. Hearing this recording, Kuzmenko invited the singer to create a cover of the song “Old Photographs”. Subsequently, a video clip was shot for this song.
Initially, Khoma planned to call the project “Dzidzio” – this is how his Polish grandfather Jan Kazimirovich Markul was called in the family, but Kuzmenko advised to postpone this idea. This is how the group “Sex Shop Boys” appears.
In parallel with the performances of the group “Friends” at corporate parties, Khoma, as the head of the team, entertained the participants with comic stories during breaks, using the Nadsyansk dialect and the characteristic voice of the “old grandfather”. This is how Dzidzia’s first monologues appeared.
During one of the private performances, the singer met Anatoly Bezukh, who later became a producer of DZIDZIO. From that moment on, the name of the project began to be written in Latin.
It was then that the group began a new stage of development. At the same time, the “Sex Shop Boys” project ceased to exist, having worked for less than a year.
2010 – 2015
Under the leadership of Choma, the DZIDZIO group actively tours, releases new songs and accompanies them with short works of its own production. These projects gained the support of listeners and became the basis for the transition to full-length films.
On May 18, 2013, an important event in the singer’s career took place – together with the DZIDZIO group, he gave a solo concert at the Arena Lviv stadium, becoming the first in Ukrainian show business to gather more than 25 thousand people.
2015 – 2020
From 2015 to 2020, Homa focused on making his first feature film, “DZIDZIO Double Bass”. He acted as the author of the idea, producer, screenwriter and lead actor. In the end, the film received the “Viewer’s Choice” award of the Golden Dzyga Award and set a record for Ukrainian film distribution at the box office.
In the same year, DZIDZIO reassembled the stadium “Arena Lviv” as part of the “Super-pupper” show, which was dedicated to the release of a new album.
After that, the singer shot another film – “DZIDZIO First Time”, where he acted as a director, author of the idea, producer and lead actor. The film received two awards of the Golden Top: “Audience Award” and “Best Sound Engineer”.
On November 20, on his birthday, Homa gathered the Palace of Sports as part of the “Super-pupper” tour. During the concert, for the first time in Ukraine, a solid LED screen with an area of 400 square meters and heavy-duty lighting equipment were used.
In the same year, the singer sang the National Anthem before the match between the national teams of Ukraine and Lithuania. After that, he became an ambassador of the Ukrainian national football team.
At the end of the year, he began work on a large project that combined an updated version of the anthem of Ukraine and the spiritual anthem “God is great, united”. He invited 100 young musicians to record under the direction of conductor Oksana Lyniv.
2020 – present
In 2020, Khoma presented a video clip for the spiritual hymn “Prayer for Ukraine”. The recording took place in the Kyiv Recording House.
On August 24, he performed the national anthem at the celebrations on the occasion of the Independence Day of Ukraine. In particular, he received the title of Honored Artist of Ukraine.
In April 2022, he joined the joint performance of the song “Ukraine Will Win”, the author of which is composer Oleksandr Ponomarev. Together with him, singers Taras Topolya, Yuriy Tkach, Yevhen Koshovyi and Petro Chorny took part in the recording.
Against the backdrop of a full-scale war, he actively toured with concerts in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
On March 7, 2023, the singer and Ponomarev presented the duet “Hey, Falcons”. In the same month, Homa showed a short author’s film “Who Are You”.
In November, he presented the video “Lanterns”, created together with volunteer Anna-Maria Herman.
Marital Status
In November 2013, the singer married singer Yaroslava Prytula, who performs under the name SLAVIA.
In April 2021, Khoma announced his divorce.
