Alexander Alekseevich Shalimov is a surgeon, one of the founders of the Ukrainian surgical school.
Place of Birth, Education
He was born on January 20, 1918 in the village of Vvedenka, Lipetsk region, Russia, in a large peasant family.
In 1925, the family moved to the Kuban, where the future surgeon began to study at school.
Already in 1934, Shalimov entered the working faculty of the Kuban Medical School, which he graduated with honors in 1936. After that, until 1941 he studied at the Medical Faculty of the Kuban Medical Institute.
Career
In 1941, he began working as a surgeon at the Nerchinsko-Zavodsk Interdistrict Hospital of the Chita Region. Later he became the chief physician.
Since 1944, he headed the surgical department of the Petrovsk-Zabaikalsky City Hospital of the Chita Region of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR), and since 1946 – the surgical department of the Bryansk Regional Hospital.
In 1949, he became the chief surgeon of the Oryol Regional Health Department and the head of the surgical department of the regional hospital.
Since 1952, he worked as an assistant at the Department of Hospital Surgery of the Kursk Medical Institute.
Since 1953, Shalimov was the chief surgeon of the Bryansk Regional Health Department and headed the surgical department of the regional hospital. Two years later, in 1955, he defended his Ph.D. thesis on the creation of an artificial esophagus for cicatricial obstruction.
Since 1957, he worked as an associate professor at the Department of Surgery of the Kharkiv Medical Institute, in 1958 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the surgical treatment of cancer of the pancreatic head and papilla.
From 1959 to 1970, Shalimov worked in medical and scientific institutions in Kharkiv. He headed the Department of Thoracic Surgery and Anesthesiology of the Ukrainian Institute for Advanced Training of Doctors.
In particular, in 1965 he became the director of the Kharkiv Research Institute of General and Emergency Surgery.
Since 1970, he worked in Kyiv: he headed the Department of Thoracoabdominal Surgery of the Kyiv Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians and was the Director of the Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion.
In 1972, he headed the Kyiv Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery.
Since 1975, Shalimov has been the founder and director of the Institute of Surgery and Transplantology, which was later named after him. In 1978, he also became a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (Ukrainian SSR).
He developed new methods of surgical treatment of diseases of the digestive system, heart, blood vessels and cancer. He was also the first to successfully perform a pancreas transplant in a patient with diabetes.
Under his leadership, the first heart transplant operation was performed in Ukraine.
During his lifetime, Shalimov performed about 40 thousand operations. In 1998, he was recognized as the “Man of the Planet”.
Death
He passed away on February 28, 2006 in Kyiv.
