Andriy Volodymyrovych Parubiy – People’s Deputy of Ukraine of the VI, VII and VIII, IX convocations, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (2016 – 2019), First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada (2014 – 2016), Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (2014).
Place of Birth, Education
He was born on January 31, 1971 in the city of Sheptytsky (formerly Chervonograd), Lviv region.
In 1994, he completed his studies at the Franko State University of Lviv. Later, he continued his postgraduate education, studying at the Department of Political Science and Sociology of Lviv Polytechnic National University.
Career
In 1988, he headed a nationalist youth organization – the Heritage Society. He took an active part in the national liberation movement, organized the first pickets in Ukraine. In 1989, he was arrested for holding a rally that took place without the permission of the authorities.
Since 1996, he headed the Society for Assistance to the Armed Forces and Navy of Ukraine “Patriot of Ukraine”.
In 1999, he became the editor of the scientific and political publication “Landmarks”.
On February 27, 2014, Acting President of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov signed a decree appointing Parubiy to the post of Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC).
On August 7, 2014, by the decision of the then President Petro Poroshenko, Parubiy was dismissed from his post.
Political Activities
Since 1990, he has been a deputy of the Lviv Regional Council, serving as secretary of the Standing Committee on Youth and Sports.
In 1991, together with Oleh Tyahnybok, he became one of the founders of the “Social National Party of Ukraine” (“SNPU”), which in 2004 was renamed the All-Ukrainian Association (VO) “Svoboda”.
From 1994 to 1998, he was a member of the Lviv City Council, where he headed the deputy group.
In 2002, he received the mandate of a deputy of the Lviv Regional Council. He was the deputy chairman of the regional council.
Since 2005, he headed the political force “People’s Union of Ukrainians!”, which was later reorganized into the civil association “Ukrainian House”.
In 2006, he became a deputy of the Lviv Regional Council, running for the Our Ukraine bloc.
From 2007 to 2012, he was a People’s Deputy of Ukraine of the VI convocation from the Our Ukraine – People’s Self-Defense bloc. He headed the subcommittee on control over the implementation of foreign relations as part of the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs. He was also a member of Vyacheslav Kyrylenko’s deputy group “For Ukraine!”.
Since December 2012, he has been elected People’s Deputy of Ukraine of the VII convocation from the Batkivshchyna party. He headed the subcommittee on legislative support of Ukraine’s integration into the international scientific and educational space.
In the fall of 2014, he was elected to the Rada of the VIII convocation from the People’s Front. Subsequently, the parliament approved his candidacy for the post of first deputy chairman of the parliament.
From April 14, 2016 to August 29, 2019, he was the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the VIII convocation.
During the early parliamentary elections held in 2019, he ran for the European Solidarity party. In August, he became a people’s deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of the IX convocation. He was a member of the Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence.
Death
On August 30, 2025, Parubiy was killed in Lviv. The suspect in the murder explained this by “personal revenge against the Ukrainian authorities” and the desire to get to the Russian Federation to find the body of his deceased military son.

He was married to Ulyana Parubiy. Daughter – Yaryna.
