Giorgio Armani is an Italian designer of fashion and accessories, head of the Giorgio Armani fashion house.
Place of Birth, Education
He was born on July 11, 1934 in the city of Piacenza, in northern Italy.
The childhood of the future fashion designer took place in modest conditions.
After school, Armani decided to get a medical education and entered the University of Milan. He was inspired to do this by the main character of Archibald Cronin’s novel “Citadel”.
Career
After some time, Armani interrupted his studies, as he was called up for military service.
During a short vacation, he returned to Milan and, on the recommendation of a friend, got a job in the famous Rinascente department store, where he was engaged in window decoration and mannequin placement.
Subsequently, he began to collaborate with designer Nino Cerutti, with whom he created his first collection of clothes. Over time, he began working as a freelance designer for various brands.
Armani
In 1975, Armani, together with architect Sergio Galeotti, founded Giorgio Armani S.p.A., which immediately presented the first collection of clothes under its own name. The knowledge gained during his studies at the university came in handy for the designer, since understanding the structure of the human body and its movements helped him create comfortable clothes that do not hinder movement.
The brand quickly gained popularity in Europe, but until 1980, the American public did not show much interest in the new name in the fashion field. The turning point was the film “American Gigolo”, where actor Richard Gere appeared in costumes from Armani. After that,the brand gained international recognition and became one of the most popular overseas.
The growth in demand gave Armani the opportunity to open the first boutiques in Milan.
In 1985, his business partner Galeotti died due to AIDS. Many believed that without the latter, the company would not be able to stay afloat, but Armani proved the opposite.
In 1989, the fashion designer opened his own restaurant, and in the late 1990s, the Armani chain already had more than 200 stores around the world, with sales of about $ 2 billion.
Gradually, the brand expanded its assortment – lines of underwear, swimwear, accessories and cosmetics appeared. Over time, the company began to create perfumes and household goods.
The most famous world-class stars often appeared in the advertising campaigns of the Armani brand, including, for example, David Beckham, Megan Fox, Julia Roberts, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and many others.
Since 2002, the designer has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, supporting humanitarian initiatives around the world.
Awards
Throughout his career, Armani has been honored with a number of national and international honors. Among them:
- Order of Merit of the Italian Republic;
- Best International Designer Award;
- the Professional Achievement Award for the creation of a menswear line, both from the Council of Fashion Designers of America;
- honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art;
- the title of “Designer of the Year”;
- the inaugural Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Award for pioneering contributions to the combination of the fashion and film industries.
- the Order of the Legion of Honor of France, which was personally presented by the then President of the country, Nicolas Sarkozy.

Marital Status
Giorgio Armani led a rather secluded lifestyle, was not married and had no children. According to media reports, he had a relationship with Galeotti’s business partner.
