Marco Antonio Rubio is an American politician, US Secretary of State (2025 – present), US Senator from Florida (2011 – 2025), member of the Republican Party.
Place of Birth, Education
He was born on May 28, 1971 in Miami, Florida, in the family of Cuban immigrants Mario Rubio and Oria Garcia. The family had three children, including the future Secretary of State of the United States of America (USA).
After graduating from school in 1989, he entered Tarkio College on a sports scholarship.
Subsequently, he continued his studies at the University of Florida, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1993.
In 1996, he graduated from the University of Miami School of Law with a Juris Doctorate.
Career
In 1998, Rubio was elected to the West Miami City Council, and in 1999 to the Florida House of Representatives.
Between 2003 and 2006, he was the majority leader in the Florida House of Representatives, and from 2006 to 2008 he served as speaker.
In 2008, Rubio began teaching political science at Florida International University and continued this activity even after entering the Senate.
In the 2010 elections, he won and became a senator from Florida. He held the position until January 20, 2025.
In the summer of 2012, Rubio was considered as a possible candidate for vice president on Mitt Romney’s election campaign. In the end, the latter chose Paul Ryan.
On January 20, 2025, the US Senate unanimously supported Rubio’s appointment as Secretary of State. In this position, he succeeded Antony Blinken and became the first Latin American to head the State Department.
Between February and August, Rubio served as Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Since February 16, 2025, he has been serving as Acting Archivist of the United States.
Also, since May 1, Rubio has been temporarily acting national security adviser after the resignation of Michael Waltz.
Attitude to Ukraine
In 2014, after the Russian annexation of Crimea, Rubio actively supported Ukraine. He emphasized that the United States, in his opinion, should help the country protect its sovereignty.
In 2018, he publicly supported Ukrainian journalist Stanislav Aseev, who was imprisoned by the so-called “DPR”.
After the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, Rubio maintained the same position. He stated that an independent Ukraine should exist under any conditions and that the United States, in his opinion, should support Ukraine as long as it is ready to fight.
Already in 2024, Rubio already expressed a more skeptical attitude to Kyiv’s indefinite military assistance.
On April 24, he voted against providing aid to Ukraine.
Marital Status
He is married to Janet Dusdebes, who previously worked as a bank teller and was a cheerleader for the Miami Dolphins.
The couple has four children and resides in West Miami.
