German Vladimirovich Smetanin – General Director of JSC “Ukrainian Defense Industry” (2023-2024, August 2025 – current time), Minister for Strategic Industries of Ukraine (2024 – 2025), General Director of the State Enterprise “Plant. Place of Birth, Education
He was born on October 8, 1992 in Kharkiv.
He graduated from the Kharkiv National Automobile and Highway University, where he received the qualification of a design engineer.
Subsequently, he completed his studies at the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” as a manager for the management of the military-industrial complex.
Career
In the period from 2014 to 2015, he held a position in the Kharkiv Design Bureau for Mechanical Engineering of the State Concern “Ukroboronprom”.
Later, he continued his career at the Lviv Armored Plant, where he worked as chief designer and chief engineer.
During 2020 – 2021, he was the production director of the state enterprise (SE) “Malyshev Plant”.
From April 2021 to April 2023, he headed the Kharkiv Armored Plant.
In April 2023, he was appointed General Director of the State Enterprise “Malyshev Plant”, where he worked until June 2023.
On June 28, he was appointed to the position of General Director of the Joint Stock Company (JSC) “Ukrainian Defense Industry”.
On September 4, 2024, the Supervisory Board of the JSC decided to terminate his powers as CEO.
The next day, September 5, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approved him as Minister of Strategic Industries.
He was dismissed as part of the resignation of the government of Denys Shmyhal in July 2025.
On August 20 of the same year, he again headed Ukroboronprom.
