Andriy Viktorovich Hnatov – Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (2025 – present), member of the Staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine (2025 – present).
Place of Birth, Education
In 2001, he completed his studies at the Kharkiv Institute of Tank Forces.
Military career
From 2016 to 2018, he served as Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade.
In 2018, after the formation of the command of the Marine Corps of Ukraine, he was appointed commander of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade and headed it until 2021.
In 2019, the so-called “prosecutor’s office” of the “DPR” terrorist formation opened a fabricated “case” against Hnatov on charges of “committing a terrorist act”. As of 2022, he served as Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander of the Operational Command “South” of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), and was also the commander of the joint group of troops “Primorye” in the Odesa direction.
In June 2022, he was awarded the rank of brigadier general.
In the spring of 2023, Hnatov led the defense of Bakhmut within the framework of the operational and tactical group “Soledar”, which was part of the area of responsibility of the operational-strategic group of troops “Khortytsia”.
Since October 2023, he has served as commander of the operational-strategic group of troops “Odesa”. In the period from the end of 2023 to February 2024, he led the Kupyansk tactical group and commanded the 30th Marine Corps of the Navy (Navy).
In February 2024, he was appointed commander of the troops of the operational command “East”.
On June 24, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree appointing Hnatov to the post of commander of the joint forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. On August 23, he was awarded the military rank of Major General.
On February 26, 2025, he was dismissed from the post of Commander of the Joint Forces. The very next day, February 27, he was appointed Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
On March 16, 2025, he took the post of Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
