Taisia Nikolaevna Povaliy is a Ukrainian singer, collaborator, People’s Deputy of Ukraine of the VII convocation.

Place of Birth, Education

She was born on December 10, 1964 in the village of Shamraivka in the Kyiv region. She received her secondary education in Bila Tserkva.

In 1984, she graduated from the Glier Kyiv Music College. She studied at the conducting and choral department and optional academic vocals.

Career

After completing her studies, she worked at the State Kyiv Music Hall until 1990 – first as part of a vocal group, later she became a soloist.

In 1990, she won the competition of the State Television and Radio of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) “New Names” in Moscow.

In 1993, she received the Grand Prix of the festival “Slavic Bazaar” in Vitebsk, and also won the competition named after Vladimir Ivasyuk “The song will be between us” in Chernivtsi.

A year later, she became the winner of the title “New Star of the Old Year”. In 1995, her first album “Lady of Love” was released.

In 1996 and 1998, she won the program “Person of the Year” in the nomination “Pop Star”.

In 1996, she received the title of Honored Artist of Ukraine, and in 1997, by decree of President Leonid Kuchma, she was awarded the title of People’s Artist of Ukraine.

In 1998, she received the award of the Golden Firebird competition.

In the mid-2000s, she began collaborating with singer Nikolai Baskov. In 2005, their duo won the Golden Gramophone Award for the song “Let Me Go”.

In 2015, she took part in the project “Toch-v-toch” on the Russian “Channel One”, where artists are reincarnated as famous personalities.

Political Activities

In the elections to the Verkhovna Rada of the VII convocation, she was No. 2 on the list of the Party of Regions.

In the parliament, she headed the subcommittee on creative activities, art, cultural and educational work and charity in the committee on culture and spirituality.

On September 17, 2014, together with the deputy group “For Peace and Stability”, she visited the State Duma of the Russian Federation (RF). Then Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Oleksandr Turchynov called this visit a betrayal. After that, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) opened criminal proceedings under the article on encroachment on the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Civic position

During Russia’s war against Ukraine, Povaliy continued to perform in Russia and appeared on Russian television, in particular on Channel One.

She caused a wave of criticism because of her participation in the New Year’s broadcast of the Inter TV channel on the night of December 31, 2014 to January 1, 2015.

In September 2015, a draft law was submitted to the Verkhovna Rada to deprive her of the title of “People’s Artist of Ukraine”.

On May 9, 2022, during the full-scale war, she performed in the Kremlin at a concert dedicated to the so-called “Victory Day”, which was broadcast by the Rossiya 1 TV channel.

Criminal Cases

On February 15, 2024, Povaliy was declared a suspect in absentia. She is accused of collaborating and supporting Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) incriminated three articles: collaborationism, public calls for aggressive war, and justification of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation.

On October 23, the High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC) satisfied the claim of the Ministry of Justice and decided to recover the singer’s assets to the state.

A month later, by decree of President Volodymyr Zelensky, Povaliy was deprived of state awards.

Marital Status

From 1982 to 1993 she was married to keyboard musician Vladimir Povaliy From the marriage she has a son, Denis.

Since December 1993, she has been married to Igor Likhuta, who is her producer.
