Paul Thomas Anderson is an American director and screenwriter, 11-time Academy Award nominee.
Place of Birth, Education
He was born on June 26, 1970 in Los Angeles, California, United States of America (USA), in the family of actor Ernie Anderson. While still at school, he became interested in cinema and made his first amateur short film.
Between 1988 and 1989, Anderson studied for two semesters at Emerson College, after which he entered the film school at New York University, but left it even earlier.
Career
Anderson began as an assistant at studios in New York and Los Angeles, where they created television films and TV shows. Subsequently, he joined as an assistant in the filming of several independent films.
In 1992, he shot his first short film “Cigarettes and Coffee”, using his own script and a borrowed camera. A year later, the tape was shown at the Sundance Film Festival, which paved the way for him to create his debut feature film.
In 1996, his first major work “Fatal Eight” was released, in which famous actors played. The film was presented at the Cannes and Sundance film festivals, and Anderson himself was recognized as one of the most promising directors of 1997.
His next tape – “Boogie Nights” – told about the world of the industry in the late 1970s. Despite the provocative theme, the film received rave reviews from critics, several professional awards, and nominations for Golden Globes and Oscars.
In 1999, the director presented the film “Magnolia”.
The film “Oil”, which was released in 2007, brought Anderson real international recognition. The film won two Academy Awards – for Best Actor and Best Cinematography. According to the BBC, “Oil” is one of the three most outstanding films of the XXI century. In particular, two more works of the director were also included in the top 100.
In 2008, Anderson received the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for Best Director.
He also filmed Thomas Pynchon’s novels twice: the black comedies “Congenital Defect” in 2014 and “One Battle After the Other” in 2025.
In general, the director’s films are distinguished by a large number of characters and a complex, multi-layered plot structure, thanks to which they are highly appreciated by both viewers and critics. In scripts, the director often prescribes roles specifically for his favorite actors, who constantly appear in his films.
Other projects
In addition to his work in films, Anderson also made music videos. He created several music videos for singer Fiona Apple on the songs “Across the Universe”, “Fast as You Can”, “Limp” and “Paper Bag”.
In 1997, he directed the video “Try” for Michael Penn, in 1999 – “Save Me” for Aimee Mann, and in 2002 – “Here We Go” for John Bryon.
He was also a backup director of Robert Altman’s latest film, Companions. His task was to control the filming process and take over the project in case the 80-year-old Altman could not continue working.
In particular, he shot a number of videos for the Haim group. Subsequently, the band’s vocalist Alana Haim played the main role in his 2021 film “Licorice Pizza”.

The director has been married to American actress and comedian Maya Rudolph since 2001.
The couple has four children.
