Antoine Griezmann is a French soccer player and forward for the Spanish club Atlético Madrid.

He was born on March 21, 1991, in Mâcon, France.
He began playing soccer in the youth teams of the “Macon” and “Real Sociedad” clubs.
He joined the Spanish club’s academy at age 14 after a youth tournament, where scouts from several European teams took notice of his play.
Career
Griezmann made his senior soccer debut in 2009 with Real Sociedad. He played for the club for five seasons and appeared in more than 200 matches across various competitions.
On July 29, 2014, the soccer player signed a 6-year contract with Atlético Madrid. Over the next four seasons, he consistently led the club in scoring, netting at least 25 goals per season across all competitions.
At the end of 2016, he was named French Soccer Player of the Year, and in 2017, FIFA named him one of the top three players of the previous season.
In the summer of 2017, Griezmann was close to joining Manchester United, but pulled out of the transfer at the last minute. The reason was a two-year transfer ban imposed on Atlético.
On June 12, 2019, the soccer player officially signed a contract with Barcelona.
On November 12, 2023, in a La Liga match against Villarreal, he scored his 169th goal for Atlético Madrid in all competitions. With that goal, he tied Adrian Escudero, who was the second-highest scorer in the club’s history.
On December 19, in a La Liga match against Getafe, Griezmann scored twice, bringing his total to 173 goals for Atlético. In doing so, he tied Luis Aragonés—the club’s all-time leading scorer at the time.
On January 10, 2024, in the Spanish Super Cup match against Real Madrid, Griezmann scored his 174th goal for Atlético in all competitions. With that goal, he surpassed Aragonés, whose record had stood since 1974, and became the club’s all-time leading scorer.
On February 1, 2025, Griezmann played his 421st match for Atlético—it was against Mallorca. With this appearance, he entered the club’s top 10 in terms of appearances and tied Juan Carlos Arteche.
On February 8 of that year, the Madrid derby against Real Madrid marked Griezmann’s milestone La Liga appearance for Atlético—it was his 300th league match for the Madrid club.
Appearances for national teams
In 2010, Griezmann made his debut for the French youth national team. He played in 7 matches and scored 3 goals.
From 2011 to 2013, he was called up to the French youth national team. He played in 19 official matches for the team and scored 4 goals.
On March 5, 2014, Griezmann made his debut for the French national team in an official match— a friendly against the Netherlands. That same year, he traveled to the World Cup in Brazil, where he played in all five of France’s matches. France reached the quarterfinals that year.
At Euro 2016, held in France, Griezmann helped the French national team reach the final, where they lost to Portugal. He played in all seven of France’s matches and scored six goals, becoming the tournament’s top scorer.
His goals in the playoffs were crucial. In the round of 16, Griezmann scored twice against Ireland, and in the semifinals, he scored twice against Germany. In both matches, his goals were the game-winners and propelled France to the next round.
At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he also played in all seven of France’s matches. During the tournament, Griezmann scored four goals—including a penalty kick in the final—and helped his team win the World Cup.
On September 30, 2024, he announced that he was retiring from the French national team.
Marital Status
Griezmann is married to Erica Chopera, a Spanish woman.
They met in December 2011 and were officially married on June 15, 2017.
The couple has three children:
- Their first daughter, Mia, was born on April 8, 2016;
- Their second child, a son named Amaro, was born on April 8, 2019. He was named after his grandfather, Antoine—Amaro Lopez;
- On April 8, 2021, the couple welcomed another daughter—Alba.
