{"id":7047,"date":"2026-08-27T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepersona.com.ua\/officials\/friedrich-mehring-7047\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T10:00:54","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T07:00:54","slug":"friedrich-mehring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepersona.com.ua\/en\/doctors\/friedrich-mehring-7047\/","title":{"rendered":"Friedrich Mehring"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Friedrich Friedrichovich Mehring is a general practitioner of German origin, scientist, professor at the University of St. Vladimir, Honored Professor and Honorary Member of the University.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Place of Birth, Education<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was born on <strong>March 10, 1821<\/strong> in the city of Dona, Kingdom of Saxony.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1840 he graduated from the gymnasium in Dresden, and in 1841 he entered the medical faculty of the University of Leipzig. In addition to medicine, he studied chemistry and philosophy. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1843, he received 2 gold medals of the university for student research.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1845, he graduated and defended his dissertation &#8220;An Attempt to Study the Integument of the Tongue&#8221;. He received the degree of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery and the diploma of obstetrician. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Career<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of 1845, Mehring moved to the Russian Empire and headed a hospital with 50 beds in Buromka, Poltava province.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To get the right to practice medicine, he passed exams at the University of St. Volodymyr and received the qualification of a doctor of the 1st class. He worked in Buromka for about 2 years, after which <strong>he was engaged in private practice<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1849, Mehring moved to St. Petersburg, where he was engaged in pathological anatomy in the 1st Military Land Hospital. There he also <strong>met Nikolai Pirogov<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1851, Mehring passed his doctoral exams at the University of Dorpat, after which his doctoral qualification was recognized in the Russian Empire.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the early 1850s, he <strong>worked as a doctor on the Kachanivka estate in the Chernihiv region<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Career in Kyiv<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1853, the Kyiv stage of Mehring&#8217;s career began. On September 1 (13 according to the Gregorian calendar) he became an adjunct of the Department of State Medical Science of the University of St. Volodymyr, and on November 4 (16 according to the Gregorian calendar) in 1854 &#8211; an extraordinary professor. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He taught forensic medicine, hygiene, medical police and the history of medicine.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On May 31 (June 12 according to the Gregorian calendar) in 1855, <strong>he headed the therapeutic hospital clinic at the Kyiv Military Hospital<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1856, he was sent to the Southern Army to study the typhus epidemic.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his business trip, Mehring worked in the areas of deployment of troops in the Crimea, and after the end of hostilities, he got acquainted with the work of French and British military hospitals in the Crimea and Constantinople.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He, together with Sergei Alferiev, published the results of research on the typhus epidemic in the Military Medical Journal. For this work, Mehring was awarded the Order of St. Anne III degree and the medal &#8220;In Memory of the War of 1853-1856&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1857, he moved to the Department of Private Pathology and Therapy and continued to head the hospital therapeutic clinic.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From 1857, Mehring worked at the Department of Private Pathology and Therapy and continued to direct the hospital therapeutic clinic.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1858, he visited Germany, Belgium, France and England, where he got acquainted with new approaches to therapy and the work of clinics.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mehring was also involved in the development of the Faculty of Medicine. On his initiative, in 1865, <strong>the Department of Medical Chemistry and Physics was created<\/strong>. In particular, he supported the introduction of a separate course of skin diseases and a corresponding department at the Kyiv Military Hospital.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together with Pirogov and other professors, Mehring <strong>advocated strengthening the practical training of students<\/strong> and the introduction of assistant positions at clinical departments.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1865, <strong>he headed the Department of the Faculty Therapeutic Clinic of the University of St. Volodymyr<\/strong>, which he headed until 1886.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1886, he left the management of the faculty therapeutic clinic, and on January 4, 1887, he became an honorary member of the University of St. Volodymyr.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Death<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mering died on <strong>October 31, 1887<\/strong> in Kyiv at the age of 66.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Marital Status<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1859, Mehring married Catherine Tomara.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The couple had 5 children &#8211; Sofia, Mikhail, Nadezhda, Sergey and Vladimir.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Friedrich Friedrichovich Mehring is a general practitioner of German origin, scientist, professor at the University of St. Vladimir, Honored Professor and Honorary Member of the University.
