{"id":6924,"date":"2026-08-10T16:40:31","date_gmt":"2026-08-10T13:40:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepersona.com.ua\/ihor-gordiychuk-6924\/"},"modified":"2026-08-10T16:40:44","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T13:40:44","slug":"ihor-gordiychuk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepersona.com.ua\/en\/military\/ihor-gordiychuk-6924\/","title":{"rendered":"Ihor Gordiychuk"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ihor Volodymyrovych Gordiychuk &#8211; Ukrainian military leader, Deputy Head of the National Defense University of Ukraine (2023 &#8211; present), Major General of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (2016).  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Place of Birth, Education<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was born <strong>on November 12, 1972<\/strong> in the village of Zaliznytsia, Rivne region.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1989, after graduating from Koretsk Secondary School No. 1, he entered the Omsk Higher Tank Engineering School.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later, he transferred to the Kyiv Institute of the Ground Forces, where he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Training Officers of the Operational and Tactical Level.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also studied at the College of the Army of the Armed Forces of the United States Armed Forces.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Career<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his military service, Hordiychuk went from the commander of a mechanized platoon to the deputy commander of a tank regiment.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Subsequently, he continued to serve in the special forces. He was the deputy commander of the special forces brigade in Iziaslav, Khmelnytskyi region, and later<strong> headed the 8th Separate Special Forces Regiment formed on its basis<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From May to December 2010, he served as part of the international contingent in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upon his return, he became the first deputy head of the Academy of Land Forces named after Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">War in the East<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April 2014, Hordiychuk was assigned to the Main Command Center of the Ministry of Defense. He <strong>served as the head of the operational management center <\/strong>&#8211; deputy head of the Main Command Center of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He had the call signs &#8220;Twilight&#8221; and &#8220;Gordey&#8221;.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On August 12, the special forces group &#8220;Crimea&#8221; under the command of Hordiychuk <strong>broke through to Savur-Mohyla and took control of the observation post<\/strong>. From there, the military adjusted artillery fire, despite constant shelling and assaults. After losing contact, Hordiychuk continued to adjust the fire by phone.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On August 18, 2014, Ukrainian fighters were escorted, but Hordiychuk remained at Savur-Mohyla and continued to adjust artillery fire.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next day, August 19, during a massive shelling, Colonel Petro Potekhin was seriously wounded, and a paratrooper was also killed. On August 20, the situation became even more complicated, and the defenders of Savur-Mohyla were actually isolated &#8211; the nearest Ukrainian units were about 40 kilometers away.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The order to leave Savur-Mohyla came in the evening of August 24. On the night of August 25, after 12 days of defense, <strong>Hordiychuk ordered the group to retreat<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The military marched about 60 kilometers through enemy lines and joined Ukrainian units near Mnogopillia.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On August 29, Hordiychuk&#8217;s group, along with other surrounded Ukrainian soldiers, went for a breakthrough.While moving, the truck in which the soldier was was under artillery and mortar fire. A shrapnel hit him in the back of the head. Despite the wounds, he tried to control the battle, but due to blood loss, he fainted.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hordiychuk was captured by Russian paratroopers. However, due to his serious condition,<strong> he was left without help<\/strong>, but he survived. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rehabilitation<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2 days after the wound, Gordiychuk was taken to the Mechnikov Hospital in Dnipro, and later to military hospitals in Kyiv and Lviv.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since September 1, 2014, he has been in intensive care and underwent several operations. Due to a serious wound, he was partially paralyzed, and after blood poisoning, doctors put him into a medically induced coma. Treatment in critical condition lasted about 2 months.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On October 21, Hordiychuk was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine with the Order of the Golden Star. On November 8, in a military hospital, he also received the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi II and III degrees. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In early February 2015, Hordiychuk continued his rehabilitation at the Walter Reed Military Medical Center of the US Armed Forces in Washington.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February 2016, due to hemiparesis, he underwent a course of physical and neurorehabilitation at the Institute of Vertebrology and Rehabilitation. During treatment, fine motor skills, sensitivity and muscle tone were gradually restored. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Further career and military service<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his rehabilitation in the United States, Hordiychuk<strong> was appointed head of the Ivan Bohun Kyiv Military Lyceum<\/strong>. He took up his position on April 26, 2016. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On November 6, 2023, he announced that he<strong> would continue to work as deputy head of the National Defense University of Ukraine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Marital Status<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gordiychuk&#8217;s wife is called Tatiana.
