Winona Laura Horowitz is an American actress and producer, Oscar nominee (1994, 1995), Golden Globe Award winner (1994). <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Place of Birth, Education<\/h2>\n\n

She was born on October 29, 1971 <\/strong>in Olmsted County, Minnesota, United States of America (USA). <\/p>\n\n

Her parents, Cynthia and Michael Horowitz, were descendants of Jewish immigrants from Kharkiv and Romania and were engaged in literary activities. <\/p>\n\n

Since 1978, when Ryder was 7 years old, she and her family lived in an agricultural commune near the city of Elk in northern California. At the age of 10, the family moved to the city of Petaluma, California. In the first days of school, the future actress was beaten, and therefore her parents decided to temporarily transfer her to home schooling. <\/p>\n\n

In 1983, Ryder began attending acting courses at the American Conservatory in San Francisco. <\/p>\n\n

In 1987, she completed her studies at a school in Petaluma. <\/p>\n\n

Career <\/h2>\n\n

1985 – 1990 <\/h3>\n\n

In 1985, after Ryder was noticed by casting agents, she first passed film auditions<\/strong> – in the film “Desert Flower” she claimed the role of the daughter of the hero Jon Voight. <\/p>\n\n

A year later, thanks to the Triad of Artists agency, director David Seltzer drew attention to her and invited her to participate in the film Lucas. It was then that the actress chose the stage name “Ryder”,<\/strong> which comes from the surname of singer Mitch Ryder, whose music was often listened to by her father. The film “Quadrille” brought her first fame. <\/p>\n\n

Ryder’s really notable work was her role in Tim Burton’s comedy Beetlejuice in 1988. In the film, she played a gloomy girl who could see ghosts. <\/p>\n\n

In the same year, the actress starred in the film “1969” with Kiefer Sutherland and Robert Downey Jr., where she played the role of a young anti-war activist. <\/p>\n\n

In 1989, she appeared in the film “Deadly Train”. According to the plot, her character Veronica Sawyer, along with Christian Slater’s character, kill classmates, disguising crimes as suicides. The agent advised Ryder not to participate in this project, fearing a negative impact on her career, but critics received the film with restraint. <\/p>\n\n

In the same year, the film “Fireballs”, dedicated to musician Jerry Lee Lewis, was released. Ryder played his wife of 13 years, Myra, and it was for this role that she received her first Young Artist Awards. <\/p>\n\n

In 1990, she starred in three films at once. In particular, she played the main role in Tim Burton’s film “Edward Scissorhands”.<\/strong> This was the last job where the actress played a teenager. <\/p>\n\n

For her role in the film “Mermaids”, which also starred singer Cher and actress Christina Ricci, Ryder received a Golden Globe nomination<\/strong> in the category “Best Supporting Actress”. In the same year, she played in the drama “Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael”, which was not successful at the box office. <\/p>\n\n

In addition, Ryder was offered the role of the daughter of Don Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s film The Godfather 3. However, due to illness, she was forced to refuse. <\/p>\n\n

1991 – 2000 <\/h3>\n\n

After the role of a taxi driver in the first episode of the film “Night on Earth” in 1991, directed by Jim Jarmusch, Ryder appeared in another work by Coppola – “Bram Stoker’s Dracula”.<\/strong> In the film, she played Mina Harker. <\/p>\n\n

In 1993, she took part in the film adaptation of Isabel Allende’s novel “House of the Spirits”. Then her partners in the film were actors Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons, Glenn Close and Antonio Banderas. <\/p>\n\n

For her role in Martin Scorsese’s 1993 film The Age of Innocence, based on the novel by Edith Wharton, Ryder received a Golden Globe<\/strong> for Best Supporting Actress and was nominated for an Oscar <\/strong>in the same category. A year later, she starred in the film adaptation of the novel “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott, which brought her another Oscar nomination. In particular, she played in Ben Stiller’s comedy “Reality Bites”. <\/p>\n\n

She also played a small role in Al Pacino’s directorial debut, the documentary “Finding Richard”. <\/p>\n\n

The following year, Ryder appeared in the thriller “Alien: Resurrection”, where her partner was Sigourney Weaver.<\/p>\n\n

In 1998, she became a member of the jury of the Cannes Film Festival. <\/p>\n\n

A year later, she played the main role in the drama “Interrupted Life” and at the same time acted as an executive producer of the tape. The film was based on the diary of a girl who, at the age of 17, tried to commit suicide and ended up in a psychiatric hospital. The picture, where the supporting roles were played by Angelina Jolie, Vanessa Redgrave and Whoopi Goldberg, was positively evaluated by critics, but the box office was low. <\/p>\n\n

2000 – 2009<\/h3>\n\n

In 2000, Ryder starred in the melodrama “Autumn in New York” with Richard Gere. The tape was criticized, and the acting duo received a nomination for the Golden Raspberry anti-award <\/strong>as the “worst couple”. In the same year, the horror film “Lost Souls” was released, filmed back in 1998, where her brother Yuri also appeared. <\/p>\n\n

On October 6, Ryder unveiled the star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame <\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

In 2002, she starred in the comedy “Millionaire Unwittingly” and was again nominated for the Golden Raspberry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

In 2004, the actress played episodic roles in the fantastic film “Simone” with Al Pacino and in the film “Sticks” by the Italian director Asia Argento.<\/p>\n\n

In 2009, the actress appeared in the films “Only Peace” with Hilary Duff and “The Private Life of Pippa Li” with Keanu Reeves. In particular, she played a cameo role as Amanda Grayson, Spock’s mother, in the Star Trek film. <\/p>\n\n

In 2010, the actress starred in the film “Black Swan”,<\/strong> where she played Beth McIntyre, and a year later she appeared in the film “Dilemma”, playing the role of Geneva. <\/p>\n\n

In 2012, she took part in several projects at once: she voiced the character of Elsa Van Helsing in the animated film Frankenweenie, played Martin in the film Surveillance, and played the role of Deborah Pellicotti in the film Ice.<\/p>\n\n
