{"id":5266,"date":"2025-11-17T13:06:42","date_gmt":"2025-11-17T11:06:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepersona.com.ua\/ivan-karpenko-karyi-5266\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T17:29:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T14:29:00","slug":"ivan-karpenko-karyi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepersona.com.ua\/en\/history\/ivan-karpenko-karyi-5266\/","title":{"rendered":"Ivan Karpenko-Karyi"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ivan Karpovich Karpenko-Kary (Tobilevich) is a Ukrainian writer, playwright, actor, erudite, one of the luminaries of the Ukrainian domestic theater.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Place of Birth, Education<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was born on <strong>September 17 (29 according to the Gregorian calendar) 1845<\/strong> in the family of the nobleman Karp Tobilevich of the Trivdar coat of arms, who was the manager of the landlord&#8217;s estate. Her mother used to be a serf maid, whom her father bought from the Zolotnitsky landowners.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Career  <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 1859, Karpenko-Karyi worked as a clerk for a bailiff in the town of Mala Vyska, and later took the position of a clerk of the city government.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1864, he joined the county court, and the next year, in 1865, he moved to Yelisavetgrad, where he became the head of the county police department.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, he actively participated in cultural life: he participated in amateur theatrical performances of the poet Alexander Tarkovsky, published literary and critical articles and joined the illegal Narodnaya Volya circle of public figure Opanas Mikhalevich.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1883, in the almanac &#8220;Rada&#8221;, Karpenko-Karyi <strong>published the story &#8220;The Recruit&#8221;,<\/strong> using the pseudonym Hnat Karyi.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the same year, the authorities received a denunciation that the writer hid public figures Alexander and Sofia Rusov and allegedly helped them with fake passports. During the inspection, the gendarmes drew attention to the fact that many documents for illegal Narodnaya Volya members were issued by the police of Yelysavetgrad. Because of this, Karpenko-Kary was dismissed from the post of police secretary, after which he joined the theater troupe of Mikhail Starytskyi.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1884, he <strong>was arrested and exiled to Novocherkassk<\/strong>. There, Karpenko-Karyi worked as a blacksmith, and later opened a bookbinding workshop. In particular, <strong>he wrote his first drama &#8220;The Shepherd&#8221; (&#8220;Barge Hauler&#8221;)<\/strong>, as well as the plays &#8220;Bondarevna&#8221;, &#8220;Smart and Fool&#8221;, &#8220;Mercenary&#8221; and &#8220;Talentless&#8221;. Between 1886 and 1887, these works were published, along with another of his famous plays, &#8220;Martin Borulya&#8221;.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1886, the <strong>first &#8220;Collection of Dramatic Works&#8221; was published<\/strong> in Kherson.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1887, having received permission to return, Karpenko-Karyi,<strong> together with his wife Sofia Ditkovska, returned to Ukraine<\/strong> and settled on a farm in the Yelisavetgrad district.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1888, Karpenko-Kary was removed from public supervision. In particular, he joined the theater troupe of his brother Mykola Sadovsky, and later &#8211; the troupe of Panas Saksagansky. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1890, he <strong>became a member of the Society of Ukrainian Artists <\/strong>and wrote the satirical comedy &#8220;One Hundred Thousand&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1897, he prepared a note for the congress of stage workers in Moscow, dedicated to the oppression of the Ukrainian theater. It was read from the rostrum by actor Panas Saksagansky. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1899, the writer wrote the historical tragedy &#8220;Sava Chaly&#8221;, dedicated to the events of the Haidamachchyna of the XVIII century.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the period from 1900 to 1904, <strong>he organized his own theater troupe<\/strong> and wrote the plays &#8220;The Master&#8221;, &#8220;Vanity&#8221; and &#8220;The Sea of Life&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Death\/Fatalities<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1906, Karpenko-Karyi fell seriously ill and went to Berlin for treatment.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On <strong>September 2 (15 according to the Gregorian calendar), 1907<\/strong>, the writer died of liver and spleen cancer. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Marital Status<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1870, Karpenko-Karyi married Nadezhda Tarkovskaya, with whom he later raised seven children.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1881, Tarkovskaya died, and the next year, in 1882, their daughter Halyna died.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two years later, the writer married Sofia Ditkovskaya, a chorus member of the theater troupe of Mikhail Starytskyi.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ivan Karpenko-Karyi: interesting facts<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the interesting facts about the writer:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>During his school years, the future writer was noted for his strength, but never flaunted it and used it only to protect the weaker;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>working as a police secretary in Yelisavetgrad, Karpenko-Kary was called a &#8220;strange policeman&#8221; because he did not swear in Moscow, did not take bribes and respected everyone, regardless of origin. When the gendarmerie demanded his removal from office for &#8220;unreliability&#8221;, the local authorities did not agree, and only an order from the Ministry of the Interior (MIA) forced his dismissal; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>all his life, Karpenko-Kary maintained friendly relations with the writer Mark Kropyvnytskyi &#8211; they served together as officials, organized a drama club and created a theater of luminaries;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the writer deeply respected the work of Taras Shevchenko;  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>in addition to theatrical activities, he was actively engaged in journalism, devoting his works to social and national problems of Ukraine;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>on the grave of the writer at the Lukyanivske cemetery in Kyiv, there is a tombstone in the form of a theatrical mask.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ivan Karpovich Karpenko-Kary (Tobilevich) is a Ukrainian writer, playwright, actor, erudite, one of the luminaries of the Ukrainian domestic theater.
