Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin is the President of Russia, Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

He was born on October 7, 1952 in Leningrad.
In 1975, he completed his studies at the Faculty of Law of Leningrad State University.
Coming to power
After completing his studies at higher education, Putin was sent to serve in the state security agencies. He worked in the structures of the State Security Committee of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (KGB of the USSR) in the period from 1975 to 1990. From 1985 to 1990, he served outside the Soviet Union – in the city of Dresden, Germany.
Since 1990, Putin served as assistant to the rector of Leningrad State University for international cooperation, and later became an adviser to the chairman of the Leningrad City Council.
In June 1991, he was appointed chairman of the Committee on External Relations of the St. Petersburg City Hall, and since 1994 – at the same time – at the same time the first deputy chairman of the city government.
In August 1996, he took the post of Deputy Chancellor of the President of the Russian Federation (RF) Boris Yeltsin. A year later, in March, he began working as Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation. In particular, he headed the main control department of the administration.
In May 1998, he was appointed First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Russia.
In July, Putin headed the Federal Security Service (FSB). At the same time, starting in March 1999, he also served as Secretary of the Security Council of Russia. Already in August, he was elected Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, and since the end of December he has been acting president.
Presidency
On March 26, 2000, he took the chair as President of Russia. On March 14, 2004, he was re-elected head of state for a second term.
In the parliamentary elections to the State Duma in 2007, Putin headed the electoral list of the United Russia party, without being its member. At the same time, the federal list of the party consisted exclusively of his surname. During the VIII Party Congress, having agreed to become the first number on the list, he said that after the end of his presidential powers, he was ready to head the government of the Russian Federation. At the IX Congress of United Russia, he also agreed to lead the party after the end of the presidential term.
He transferred powers on May 7, 2008 – on the day of the inauguration of Dmitry Medvedev.
In April 2008, Putin headed United Russia, and in May he was approved as the Prime Minister of Russia.
On May 7, 2012, he was elected President of Russia for the third time. The very next day, at his suggestion, the State Duma approved former President Medvedev as head of government.
On March 18, 2018, Putin was re-elected President of the Russian Federation for the fourth time.
Full-scale invasion of Ukraine
On February 24, 2022, he launched a full-scale invasion of the territory of Ukraine, calling it the so-called “special military operation” (“SVO”). Among his stated goals were the “denazification”, “demilitarization” of Ukraine and the “liberation” of Donbas.
On March 17, 2023, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued international arrest warrants for Putin, as well as Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova, on suspicion of illegal forced transfer of Ukrainian children.
In the period from March 15 to 17, 2024, presidential elections were held in Russia, according to the results of which Putin took the presidency for the fifth time. The so-called “voting” was also held in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. People were forced to participate in the “elections” at the polling stations.

Putin is divorced.
His ex-wife is Lyudmila Alexandrovna Putina. In marriage, they raised two daughters: Maria, born in 1985, and Kateryna, born in 1986.
