Serhiy Vitalievich Babak is a lawyer, economist and psychologist, adviser to the President on education, People’s Deputy of Ukraine of the IX convocation from the Servant of the People party.
Place of Birth, Education
He was born on July 31, 1978 in Kyiv.
He received an economic education at the Kyiv National Economic University, as well as Napier University, which is located in Scotland.
He also studied:
- at the Faculty of Law of the University of Advanced Technologies;
- at Uzhhorod National University with a degree in Psychology.
Career
In the period from 1999 to 2002, he held the position of head of the department responsible for entrepreneurship and investment attraction of the Ukrainian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs. From 2002 to 2008, he worked as Deputy Secretary General of the Ukrainian National Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce.
During 2009 – 2012, he was Vice-Rector, as well as Advisor to the Rector of the University of Advanced Technologies, and in the period from 2012 to 2019 he headed the State Enterprise “Scientific Technical Center for Advanced Technologies”.
From 2018 to 2019, he was the curator of educational projects within the framework of the activities of the Ukrainian Institute for the Future.
In 2020 , there were suggestions that Babak could become the new head of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (MES). President Volodymyr Zelenskyy approached him with a proposal to head the department, but Babak refused the post.
In 2023, he decided to voluntarily give up his PhD in engineering amid accusations of plagiarism that had been leveled against him in the past. In particular, in 2019, his work was criticized for bad faith.
Political Activities
In the elections to the Verkhovna Rada, which took place in 2019, he was elected a people’s deputy from the Servant of the People party, occupying the 11th number in the party list. The parliament was headed by a committee dealing with science and education.
