He was born on April 17, 1969 in the city of Kharkiv.
In 1993, he completed his studies at the Faculty of Journalism of Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv.
Career
In the period from 1983 to 1992, he worked in correspondent positions in the Kyiv newspaper “Young Guard”. In 1992, he was a correspondent for the magazine “Morning”, and from 1992 to 1998 he worked in the newspaper “Kyiv News”, where he held various positions – from reporter to deputy editor-in-chief.
In the fall of 1998, he took the position of editor of the politics department in the newspaper “Dzerkalo Tyzhnia”, and in 2001 he became one of the co-founders of the public organization (NGO) “Charter-4”.
In July 2012, he went on a hunger strike in response to the adoption of the draft law “On the Principles of State Language Policy”, also known as the “Kolesnichenko-Kivalov language law”. During the clashes near the Ukrainian House in Kyiv, he suffered a heart attack.
During 2014 – 2019, he was the host of the program “Game of Classics” on the ZIK TV channel, and since 2018 he has hosted the program “Apocrypha” on Radio NV. Until 2018, he also held the position of First Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper “Mirror of the Week”.
Political Activities
In 2019, he ran for the Verkhovna Rada of the IX convocation from the political force “Holos”. He became a member of the Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence.
From the end of August 2019 to the end of December 2020, he headed the party faction.
Marital Status
He is married to Kira Ivashova. The couple has two daughters: Barbara and Justina.
