Ivan Pavlovich Pulyuy is a Ukrainian scientist, physicist, electrical engineer, inventor, organizer of science, publicist, public figure.
Place of Birth, Education
He was born on February 2, 1845 in the town of Hrymailiv in the Ternopil region.
In 1865 he graduated with honors from the Ternopil gymnasium.
Subsequently, he continued his studies at the University of Vienna, where he was educated at the Faculty of Theology in 1869 and at the Faculty of Philosophy in 1872.
Career
In the period from 1872 to 1874, he worked as a scientist in a physics laboratory and held the position of associate professor at the University of Vienna.
From 1874 to 1875 he taught physics at the Naval Academy of Fiume.
In 1875, he continued his internship under the guidance of Professor August Kundt at the University of Strasbourg, where he studied electrical engineering. The very next year, he defended his doctoral dissertation and received a PhD from this university.
After receiving the title of associate professor in Vienna, Puliui worked as a professor at the German Prague Polytechnic Institute from 1884 to 1916, where he held the positions of dean of the Faculty of Physics and rector.
In 1884, the Ministry of Education of the Austro-Hungarian Empire appointed Puluj professor of experimental and technical physics and offered to head the Department of Physics at the German Higher Technical School in Prague. In 1903, he reorganized the department, creating Europe’s first department of physics and electrical engineering.
During 1888 – 1889 he held the position of rector, and headed the department created by him for 32 years.
In 1902, he became the first dean of the first electrical engineering faculty in Europe.
In addition to teaching, Puluj worked as a state advisor on electrical engineering in the Czech Republic and Moravia.
In 1916, he was offered the post of Minister of Education of Austria, but he refused due to deteriorating health.
Death/Fatalities
He passed away on January 31, 1918. He was buried in Prague.
Marital Status
On October 4, 1884, he married Catherine-Joseph-Maria Stozhytska. The couple had six children – three daughters and three sons:
- the eldest daughter Natalka, born in 1886, became a pianist and the wife of the Ukrainian composer Vasyl Barvinsky;
- Olga, born in 1891, and Maria-Ksenia-Margarita, born in 1894, became teachers;
- sons Oleksandr-Ivan, born in 1901, and Yuri, born in 1906, became engineers;
- Pavlo, born in 1904, was a doctor.
Ivan Puliui: interesting facts
Among the interesting facts about the scientist:
- In 1881, he designed a lamp, which became the prototype of the X-ray machine. His invention received a silver medal at the International Electrotechnical Exhibition in Paris;
- the name of Ivan Puliuj was known in scientific circles throughout Europe, he was one of the leading electrical physicists of his time;
- together with the writer Panteleimon Kulish, he translated and published the Bible into Ukrainian;
- investigated electrical discharges in gases, studied molecular physics and electrical engineering of alternating currents;
- He was fluent in fifteen languages.
