After the charges were filed, Maxwell went into hiding from law enforcement for some time, but she was eventually arrested in July 2020. She then awaited the court’s decision in two cases—one involving human trafficking and the other involving perjury.
In particular, she was accused of pimping and organizing the trafficking of underage girls for Jeffrey Epstein and others. She denied all of these charges. Separately, she was a defendant in several civil lawsuits filed by women who claimed to have been victimized by the financier.
In December 2021, a U.S. court found her guilty of aiding and abetting the sexual exploitation of minors. The jury found it proven that, from 1994 to 2004, Maxwell recruited four underage girls for a sex offender, whom he then coerced into engaging in sexual acts.
Four victims testified during the trial. Two of them stated that they had been victimized by Epstein at age 14. One woman also reported that Maxwell was involved in her sexual encounters with the millionaire. Separately, documents were presented to the court confirming that Maxwell had received millions of dollars from Epstein.

In 2016, Maxwell married Scott Borgerson.
